How to Stay Awake When You Absolutely Must
In anyone’s life there do happen such sleepless nights or busy days after which comes a very difficult time (usually close to some deadline) during which you have to keep staying awake. Here comes the time to swindle both your body and your mind.
I offer you a list of relatively effective ways to keep yourself awake. All of them I tested on myself and survived! So, here you go:
Caffeine in the Coffee
Good chose if you have to stake awake for about an hour. Then are likely to appear withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, anxiety, fatigue and sleepiness reaches a greater extent. Coffee affects everyone differently and people who regularly consume it affects less than the others. Moreover about 25% of people have no stimulant effect from coffee at all.
This is not working for me as sometimes it seems I drink coffee instead of water. Yea, I do know what doctor said!
Caffeine in the cocktail
Well, I don’t remember who suggested me an home-made energy cocktail from dissoluble coffee and Coca-Cola. I have to warn you – take the glass or cup two times larger then the amount of cola that you use for the cocktail! Put 2 spoons of dry coffee and slowly stirring pour in 500ml of Coke. You’re going to have a lot of froth which is tasty, by the way.
Don’t drink the whole cocktail at one sitting! Sip it slowly! It really works better than coffee itself, just like branded energy drinks do. But, here I should mention that energy drinks have been banned in France, Denmark and Norway because of concern over health risks. So, don’t make yourself a cocktail too often!
Fasting
The human body expends a great deal of energy during the digestion process. This can create a great deal of fatigue when you are trying to stay awake. Fasting is a great way to avoid this natural fatigue. As long as you are drinking enough water, fasting for a meal or two is also a healthy way to detoxify your cells and rejuvenate organs.
However fasting is not working when you have to stay awake during nighttime during which you’re not used to eat. Well, at least you should not be used to eat during nighttime!
Keep yourself uncomfortable
Stay on your feet as much as possible. If you have to sit down, get the most uncomfortable chair you can find. Make sure the back is upright, forcing you to sit up very straight. Don’t allow your head to rest on anything (your hands, the desk, the wall).
Stay cold. If it’s a little cold, take off your sweater or jacket so you stay on the chilly side. Open a window or put on a small fan, pointed at your face.
This is a good tip, while you’re not a student who is used to sleep even standing at the busstop during winter.
Acupressure
This is a method where pressure is applied to various points of the body. It is similar to acupuncture, but does not use needles.
Five acupressure points that are known to energize are:
1. Top of the head
2. Top of the back of the neck on both sides
3. Between the thumb and forefinger on the back of the hands
4. About one hand width, or four fingers, below the knees
5. Bottom of the feet, in the center below the balls
If you’re not an acupressure guru, like me, then you probably don’t know the power of pressure that should be applied at acupressure points. Here is the ambush – there are acupressure points that are known to deaden. And you have no idea what they are!
Cold Water
Splash some cold water on your face and the pulse area of your wrists every 15-30 minutes. Drinking an ice-cold glass of water can also help to wake you up, and if you drink enough of it you’ll be up on your feet using the restroom every 30 minutes as well. Light exercise breaks are good to, but really bother your concentration.
Oh, and don’t be keen about drinking too much ice-cold water! The next day cold and fever might be your guests.
Keep your mouth busy
If you’re not speaking, sunflower seeds might give you a help! Use sunflower seeds that are still in the husk, put a small handful in your cheek and crack them open one at a time, using only your teeth and tongue; this will require just enough active thought and tongue movement to prevent you from dozing off, and the salt of the sunflower seeds is invigorating and stimulating. Spit out the sunflower husks into a paper cup as you go.
Warning: don’t let sunflower seeds cracking to capture your mind! Do you still remember why you have to stay awake?
Direct bright light
Expose yourself and your workplace to direct bright light, preferably natural daylight. Your body’s internal clock, its circadian rhythms, are regulated by your exposure to sufficient light. Even if you’re in an environment where there’s artificial light, brighter is better. If you can step outside (even on a cloudy day) or look out the window for a full minute, you’ll be more alert. Wherever you work, see if you can replace the light fixture or add a lamp that will brighten your workspace.
If you’re a student, forget about this idea, it is not going to work out for you!
Listen to the music
Better if it’s not preferable music that’s irritating or jarring to you. However whatever your tastes are, there is no doubt that blasting out the head-banging section of Queen’s "Bohemian Rhapsody" will stimulate you. Do keep in mind that the music should not be too much of a distraction. Listening to fast beat music can be a great way to keep your mind awake.
Get enough sleep whenever you can
This one should be obvious. The best way to stay awake when you need it is to be well rested. If you get enough sleep on a regular basis it will be much easier for you to stay awake or pull an all-nighter when you absolutely must.
I do understand that saying this to a teenager or a young is useless, but give me a try!
